How large can I print my photo? Pixels, dpi and cropping
Calculate a realistic print size and review cropped areas before preparing your image files for printing.
A photo has no single fixed print size. Results depend on pixels, framing, paper and viewing distance. Start with the intended dimensions in centimetres, then assess the pixels remaining after cropping. Changing a dpi value in software alone does not create new image detail.
Calculate dpi at the intended size
Add a photo to the print quality checker. Enter final dimensions in the correct orientation. The calculation accounts for the crop needed to fill the frame. Compare common formats and choose a smaller size if resolution becomes insufficient.
3000 pixels across 30 cm gives 3000 ÷ (30 ÷ 2.54), or about 254 dpi. Across 60 cm, the same image width provides about 127 dpi.

A 3:2 image cannot fill a square without cropping or leaving margins. The preview shades removed areas. Move framing to keep a face or important detail. Leave visual safety space if the print provider requires bleed or a canvas wrap.
A 3000 × 2000 pixel photo becomes 2000 × 2000 when cropped to a square. About one third of the area is removed; the tool lets you choose which side.

To explain a choice to a client or document several images, create photo report pages. Add a caption with the planned size and an approval date. The PDF gathers images and explanations. It is a presentation document rather than a replacement for the high-resolution production file the printer needs.
A report page might say “Selected image for a 30 × 20 cm print”. Download the original or cropped photo separately for production.

Before ordering, check blur, colours, final dimensions and provider instructions too. A shared album helps gather approval for selected images; resolution calculations remain guidance rather than a guarantee across all media.
